This outage was caused by a failure of the primary cluster due to a hard drive failure.
Our network partners discovered a fault with the drive during routine maintenance and checks of the server hardware and notified us of the problem. One we were notified we copied all the websites/information from the faulty drive to our offsite backup server.
Once the faulty drive was replaced we began the long painstaking task of restoring functionality to the server and then copied all the websites/information back onto the new drive from the backup server.
While the server was being worked on we took advantage of the time to conduct some housekeeping on the new server and we are now running 64bit versions of all the software on the server along with an additional mirrored raid for a little bit more resilience.
